Big Star - Thank You Friends

It’s been a wonderful month, but Alex Chilton’s rhino is all cured and we hafta return the little guy to the SPCA. I’ll always remember the good times: the time he rubbed up against Emmy and came on her (spay and neuter your pets, guys), the time we hid him from what we thought was the landlord angrily ringing the doorbell but it turned to be someone having a seizure outside, the time he tried to jump through a screen window. You were a prince, Alex. We may replace you cause fostering and curing sick pets is the best win-win ever, but I hope you find a good home. Thanks for being a furry friend.

Sure, ticker tape parades are pretty hokey. Sure, seeing baseball players talk ruins their mystique (See: Johnny Damon describing probably the greatest baserunning play in WS history). I am still incredibly jealous that these are my sister’s tickets.

It’s Never Been Like That for less than the cost of a latte. Oh, Amazon music store. Is there anything you won’t do to destroy iTunes?

Do this, people. It is one of the best albums of the decade.

After Meth crowd surfed for the fifth time and Reggie Noble jumped off a 20 foot tall speaker, they winded their set down with a Chicago instrumental….which just so happened to be Lupe’s “Kick Push”. Now, as Meth and Red were saying their goodbye’s with Soundtrakk’s soundtrack playing in the background, a shadowy figure emerged from behind the curtains and stormed the DJ booth. I was in the balcony so I couldn’t make out exactly who it was – but once he skipped the record and snatched the mic from the DJ, we all knew who was in the house. And seriously, Meth and Red were as stunned and suprised as the crowd.

Whoa. Soooo cool.

I texted my friend (Red Sox fan) in Chicago to give him some shit about how the Yankees were demolishing the Phillies. He texted back “I could care less, I’m at the Snoop method and red show. And Lupe just randomly jumped on stage!”. I was suitably sonned.

Chart of the Day:Explicit Support for Same-Sex Marriage by State and Age” (pdf) by Jeff Lax and Justin Phillips of the Department of Political Science at Columbia University. Created using data collected for a joint paper on gay rights.

Prof. Lax breaks it down:

Seven states cross the 50% mark overall as of our current estimates, but the generation gap is huge. If policy were set by state-by-state majorities of those 65 or older, none would allow same-sex marriage. If policy were set by those under 30, only 12 states would not allow-same-sex marriage.

[via.]

While this is a great breakdown which gives me hope for the future, the fact 43 states overall are against gay marriage proves that referendums aren’t the way to get minority groups their civil rights. (See: The Fourteenth Amendent)

Google Voice allows you to record separate messages that can play for selected groups. This one plays for a group called “Trusted Friends”.

Misstress Barbara (Feat. Sam Roberts) - I’m Running

Speaking of Montreal pop music, I have been in love with this song for awhile. But I never felt the need to share it here cause I thought it was being played constantly everywhere. Turns out, it is more of a hometown thing. Misstress Barbara is a DJ who created this awesomely blissed out track. She recruited fellow Montrealer Sam Roberts for a duet, and it is straight killer. But apparently outside of Montreal, this track isn’t really being heard. The best numbers I can get is #67 on the Canadian charts and non-existent on the States side of the border. So here you go, a great song! You’re welcome.

The video is fairly cool as well. I’m on the record as a fan of slo-mo running in music videos, and it is beautifully shot. The only thing I got against it is that it is shot in Toronto. C’mon, Montreal is lovely to run in slow motion through. At least I think so, from what I remember last time I dropped acid.
